being a Daddy

I was on my computer and Lily and E were playing noisily nearby.

Me: Wow! What a nice email!

(silence)

Me: Does anyone want to hear about my great email?

(silence)

Me: No one cares!?!

E: Did you say gummy bears?

Lily: Oh, I want gummy bears!

spoon dancing

E was in kitchen helping make brownies and he grabbed one of those measuring spoon sets that has different-sized spoons on a ring, like this:

When he started to move around with it, the spoons clinked against each other like a little wind chime. E noticed this and immediately began to play it like a tambourine.

Within a few seconds, he started dancing with his newly-discovered music spoons...just dancing away like mad by himself, in one spot, in front of the refrigerator.

I saw this and started singing "Spoon dancing! Spoon dancing! Look at E, he's spoon dancing!" and this set E off, out of kitchen and around the living room, shaking his body and playing his spoons, all the while laughing with an enormous smile on his face.

Sometimes, that kid is just like a shot of pure joy injected into my life.

Actual text from my wife: Lily and I...and Mo-Mo the Monkey...are going to the store.

the magic of E

E has started trying to do his own magic. He loves magic tricks.

The problem is he isn't very good at them.

For example, he's been doing a coin trick recently where the trick is that the person shows you one side of the coin, then supposedly flips the coin but when they reveal it, it is still on the same side as when you started. I'm sure it's some sort of slight-of-hand.

But what E does is flip the coin and then literally hold his hands out in front of him, with the coin covered, and really, really obviously manipulates it with his fingers.

Ta-dah!

He gets the coin back to the original side, but he doesn't even put his hands behind his back or anything. He just covers it with his hands and flips it back to the original side right in front of me.

Ta-dah!

He presents it to me with a really big smile and full of pride so I, of course, have to then say "Wow! How did you do that?!?"

Now that I think about it, I actually  like his way better than if he could really  just do the trick.

We started a fire in the fireplace and E sat down in front of it to see.

Lily: Watch out Ethan! Don't burn your face!

Lily has a great idea for herself

Lily came home from school, put her head on my shoulder and started talking in a very soft voice.

Lily: Daddy, I don't feel good.

Me: Do you have a tummy ache?

Lily: No.

Me: Why don't you lay down?

Lily: No, I don't need to lay down.

(pause)Lily: Maybe I just shouldn't go to school anymore.

Lily x 4

I'm proud to say that it was four years ago today that Lily joined our family! When we met her for the first time she was four months old, weighed nine (!) pounds and only made soft little whimpering noises. She just stared at the world around her wide-eyed and it took months and months for us to get her to smile.

Now she thinks she's Superman.

My beautiful, sweet daughter Lily is, apparently, sexist against men. While my wife was out of town for over a week, I served Lily a new Hello Kitty cereal for breakfast.

Lily: Mmmmm...this is really good. Where did it come from?

Me: I bought it when I went to the store.

Lily: You went to the store by yourself?

When I do or give something to my kids and they don't say thank you, I often say "thank you, Daddy" in a higher, kid-like voice to indicate to them that I want them to say thanks.

I brought Lily a drink and she said nothing.

Me: Thank you Daddy!

Lily: What?

Me: Thank you Daddy!

Lily: Oh, thank you Daddy.

Me: And...you're so awesome Daddy!

Lily: OK, that's just weird.

Me: No, Lily, you did not eat enough of your dinner.

Lily: YES I DID! LOOK!

(She likes pizza, but she likes to have an attitude even more.)
